列車運行時，常常產(chǎn)生作用在鋼軌上的縱向力，使鋼軌作縱向移動，有時甚至帶動軌枕一起移動。這種縱向移動，叫做爬行。爬行一般發(fā)生在復(fù)線鐵路的區(qū)間正線、單線鐵路的重車方向、下坡道上和進(jìn)站時的制動范圍內(nèi)。 線路爬行往往引起軌縫不勻，軌枕歪斜等現(xiàn)象，對線路的破壞性很大，甚至造成；車輛脫軌跑道，危及行車安全。因此，必須采取有效措施來防止爬行，通常采用防爬器和防爬撐來防止線路爬行。
1、穿銷式防爬器是由帶擋板的軌卡的穿銷組成的。安裝時，軌卡的一邊卡緊軌底，另一邊楔進(jìn)穿銷，使整個防爬器牢固地卡住軌底。這樣，鋼軌在受到縱向阻力時，由于軌卡的擋板緊貼著軌枕，于是軌枕和道訂就阻止鋼軌爬行。為了充分發(fā)揮防爬器的作用，通常在軌枕之間還安裝防爬撐，把3～5根軌枕聯(lián)系起來，共同抵抗鋼軌爬行。?
2、防爬器分為焊接式防爬器和緊固式防爬器，分別適用于多種型號的鋼軌。這種鐵路軌道用螺旋式強力防爬器，分為鑄造型和焊接型兩個形式，鑄造型是由凸、凹形軌卡、螺栓、承力板所組成；焊接型由軌卡、鎖軌扣、螺栓、軌擋和承力板所組成。這兩個形式的螺旋式強力防爬器是通過擰緊螺栓使軌卡緊緊卡住鋼軌，從而防止了鋼軌在機車行駛和剎車時造成的爬行現(xiàn)象，可減少鐵路事故的發(fā)生。
